DNA Binding and Cleavage
        >> The interaction of small molecules with DNA is an important aspect of the study of topics in  imaging and drug discovery.  Polypyridyls are an excellent ligand system with their typical planar nature and high electronic conjugation.  Coupled with the oxidizing power of thransition metal ions, the polypyridyl complexes are promising targets for photoinduced oxidative DNA damage.  A research into this DNA binding and damage can give insight into the DNA-drug delivery mechanism and can lead to futuristic drug candidates with site-specific interactions.

Luminescent Lanthanides
     >> The lanthanide complexes especially those with Eu 3+ ions at the centre reveal excellent luminescent properties.  They are synthesised through air sensitive methods and are stabilized by polypyridyl ligands and with the support of ancilliary ligands like tetrahydroboron.  Potential use of these lanthanide complexes as active agents for assymmetric catalysis is also being investigated.

Magnetic Inorganic Materials
       >> Developing molecular magnets with inorganic metal complexes or alloys is an interesting topic in current research with potential applications in electronic materials development.  Mono- and polynuclear complexes and cubanes with polypyridyl building units are a promising targets for developing magnetic materials with switchable properties. Tunable magnetic devices are designed by extending/limiting the ligand chain and the defining the number of metal nuclei centres.
